Options for Learning's transitional kindergarten (TK) programming gives 4- and 5-year-olds the time, space, and support they need to build a truly strong foundation before kindergarten. Full-day. Year-round. Small classes. The same trusted teachers your child may already know — and the readiness skills that will carry them forward for years to come.
For more than 45 years, families across the San Gabriel Valley have trusted Options for Learning to prepare their children for a confident start in school — and beyond.
Kindergarten asks a lot of young children — to sit, listen, focus, make friends, manage emotions, and learn to read, all at once. For children with a late-year birthday, or those who simply need a little more time, diving straight into kindergarten can feel like too much, too soon.
Transitional kindergarten is designed for exactly those children. Children who complete TK enter kindergarten with stronger academic foundations, better self-regulation, and the emotional confidence that comes from truly being ready.
Every detail of our support for TK-age children is designed to provide exactly what they need at this stage — and to give families the consistency they can depend on.
A complete day of learning and joy — thoughtfully blending academics, play, and enrichment to support children's growth while providing families with dependable, consistent care.
Our experienced teachers provide individualized attention, nurture meaningful relationships, and respond with care and expertise to each child's unique approach to learning.
Children remain in a nurturing, developmentally aligned environment from classroom learning to extended care — without abrupt transitions or the jarring handoffs that disrupt a child's sense of security.
Our program operates year-round (12 months). This creates a consistent, enriching experience for children and reliable support for families well beyond the traditional school-year calendar.
Our curriculum aligns with early learning standards and California's kindergarten expectations, building strong foundations in literacy, math, and social-emotional development alongside essential life skills — problem-solving, decision-making, listening, and classroom routines.
We meet children where they are, providing thoughtful, patient support with developing skills — including toilet learning when needed — because readiness looks different for every child and every family deserves a team that takes that seriously.
Children receive locally sourced, organic, healthy meals and snacks each day, supporting their growth, energy, and readiness to learn — included, at no additional cost to families.
We walk alongside families with open communication, resources, and guidance throughout the year. Strong partnerships between home and school help children thrive — and we take that partnership seriously.
Familiar teachers and consistent routines nurture confidence, build emotional security, and create a strong sense of belonging — supporting a smooth, confident transition into kindergarten.
California's expansion of TK has given more families access to this important bridge year — and that's a good thing. But not all TK programs are the same. Here's how our support for TK-age children differs from a standard district TK classroom:
Most district TK programs follow the school calendar and end in June. Options for Learning operates year-round (12 months) — so there's no summer gap, no scramble for intersession coverage, no disruption to the routines your child has built.
Traditional district TK programs vary widely on meals. At Options for Learning, locally sourced, organic meals and snacks are provided daily at no cost to families — because nutrition is an important part of the learning environment.
Children stay in the same nurturing environment from morning through afternoon — no abrupt handoffs to a different program, different staff, or different space for extended care.
We meet children where they are. If a child is still working on toilet learning or other developmental milestones, our team provides patient, supportive guidance.
Children ages 4-5 who are already enrolled in our preschool programs receive specialized TK-focused instruction with familiar teachers, trusted routines, and a community that already knows them. That continuity is one of the most powerful things we offer — and it only exists because we serve children across multiple years.
We didn't start offering support for TK-age children when California expanded the program. We've been doing this for more than 45 years. That depth of experience shows — in how our teachers respond to children, how our classrooms are designed, and how our families are supported.
If your child is enrolled in our preschool program, they can continue building the skills needed for kindergarten in the same familiar classroom environment. Through specialized instruction and age-appropriate learning experiences, children grow in confidence and readiness without transitioning to a new class, teacher or routine.
Your child already knows their teachers. They know the routines, the expectations, and the feeling of being safe and loved in this environment. Our support for TK-age children builds directly on that foundation — and families who continue with us see the difference it makes.
The Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) initiative is intended to expand access to quality early education for every 3- and 4-year-old in the state and across the country — regardless of family income or immigration status.
Options for Learning is proud to advance this initiative as an early learning provider serving TK-age children, making us one of the few organizations in the San Gabriel Valley that can partner with families from birth through TK-age and beyond.

The answer depends on your child's age, their readiness, your family's schedule, and the support your household needs. Here's a simple way to think it through:
TK-focused learning experiences are a natural continuation for children enrolled in our preschool programs. Familiar environment, familiar faces, seamless transition.
Unlike traditional district TK programs, Options for Learning’s program runs full-day and year-round — no gaps in coverage, no summer scramble.
Some children who meet the TK-age window may already be ready for the full expectations of kindergarten. Our enrollment team can help you think through what's right for your child specifically.
If you do not need full-day, year-round care, a traditional district TK program may better match your family’s schedule and needs.

Here are clear answers to the most common questions we hear from families considering our programs supporting TK-age children at Options for Learning.
At Options for Learning, we support TK-age children through our preschool programs, allowing them to continue with the same trusted teachers in a familiar environment while receiving specialized instruction that builds kindergarten readiness. Our full-day, year-round preschool services are designed for eligible children and provide a strong, seamless path toward kindergarten, with no- and low-cost options available for qualifying families.
Transitional kindergarten (TK) is a voluntary, publicly funded program for children who turn 4 between Sept. 2 and Feb. 2 — giving them an extra year to build the foundational skills that set the stage for kindergarten success. It emphasizes social-emotional development, early literacy and math, self-regulation, and classroom skills in a smaller, more supportive environment than traditional kindergarten.
In district programs, children who turn 4 between Sept. 2 and Feb. 2 are eligible for transitional kindergarten in California.
Options for Learning programs support families from infancy to school-age, including TK-age children, creating a seamless childhood learning journey with trusted teachers, familiar environments, and specialized instruction that supports kindergarten readiness.
Two key differences: Our preschool program that offers support for TK-age children is full-day and year-round. Most traditional district TK programs run on a school-year calendar and end in June, leaving families to find summer care elsewhere. Additionally, children who are enrolled in our preschool programs benefit from continuity of care — the same trusted teachers, familiar routines, and community they already know.

Our TK-aged program is provided in a mixed-age setting of 3- and 4-year-olds, where TK students learn alongside younger peers. We make every effort to group our 4‑year‑olds together to support kindergarten and district school readiness, while also fostering confidence, leadership, and social growth.
Our classroom curriculum fully supports TK standards while building the same developmentally appropriate foundation used for younger students.
All children enrolled with Options for Learning are working toward kindergarten readiness from the moment they enter our program. For TK-aged learners, instruction intentionally shifts more toward kindergarten readiness, with a heightened emphasis on foundational language development (such as letter recognition, sounds, and vocabulary development), mathematics (counting, number recognition, and problem solving), as well as social skills, coping strategies, and emotional regulation.
Our TK-aged programming uses a play-based curriculum with intentional academic learning built in. Children develop early reading, math, and social skills through hands‑on activities, exploration, and guided play, helping them build a strong foundation for kindergarten in a developmentally appropriate way.
Our TK-aged program follows a developmentally appropriate daily routine designed for young 4– to 5-year-olds. The day is structured yet flexible, with consistent routines that balance active learning, small-group instruction, outdoor play, and social-emotional development. While the daily routine is the same for all children in a classroom, TK-aged children receive an enhanced learning experience through small-group instruction that accelerates their school readiness.
Students are offered rest or quiet time during the day. Not all children are required to sleep, but all benefit from a calm period to recharge. Rest is essential to self-regulation and overall development, and quiet time supports children’s physical growth, attention span, and emotional balance.
If a student chooses not to rest during this scheduled time, an alternative, academically focused activity will be provided.
Transitional kindergarten (TK) is currently an optional program in California, similar to kindergarten. Families may choose to enroll their child in TK based on readiness and family needs, and our program is designed to provide a strong, supportive bridge into kindergarten.
Our teachers are fully qualified early childhood professionals with specialized training in early childhood development and have a child development teaching permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
District TK teachers are fully credentialed public school teachers with additional early childhood training, as TK is part of the K–12 school system.
Our teacher-to-student ratio is 1:8 — one teacher to eight students. Our TK-aged program maintains a lower student-to-teacher ratio than in traditional elementary settings to support learning through small-group instruction and a play-based approach. Additionally, a smaller ratio supports individualized attention, meaningful interactions, and maintains overall safety.
Learning continues naturally through play, conversations, and everyday family experiences. Families may receive optional at-home activities, such as reading together or talking about your child’s school day, to strengthen school-to-home and school-to-community connections. This approach supports a love of learning while reducing stress for children and families.
If your child is already advanced, our TK-aged program offers built-in opportunities to meet, stretch, and challenge them at their individual level. Teachers extend the learning through deeper questions, problem‑solving challenges, leadership roles, and more complex literacy and math activities, all within a hands-on, nurturing environment.
As a new family, you can complete an online interest form or call to speak to one of our education advisors at 626-699-8070 and learn more about the different programs we offer.
Current families who have already confirmed they will continue with us into the TK-aged program do not need to take any additional steps. Your child will be automatically included in the program — no application or further action is required.
